FRIT 7739 Field Experience Blog
The blog and practicum that accompanied it may have been my favorite assignments of the program. Being able to see the ways in which different schools use the instructional technologist and media specialist was eye opening. Going in to the practicum I saw the instructional technologist a person that does the same thing regardless of what school they were at. I slowly saw myself turn into an advocate of both positions as I believe that both are being underused at my school.
The biggest struggle of the practicum was that I was not always able to see and be involved in the types of work that I had prepared for throughout the program. When taking days to go to other schools to obtain hours all I could simply do is pick a day that works for me and the placements and then see what happens. At one placement I was able to see an amazing new club be started in the library, while at another placement I simply watched as the LSTC passed out new computers to teachers, and while that is in fact part of the job, I just wish I could have seen and done more.
This assignment shows my mastery of all sub-standards of professional development and growth. As I went through my field experience, I gained a better understanding of the job of an instructional technologist. I saw the variety of ways they're used and how that affected their ability to support the school. As I went to my placements and was exposed to new technologies and learning strategies I adjusted my own teaching habit as needed. I believe that this experience has not only made me better prepared for a potential instructional technologist but also a better teachers. Going forward I plan on collaborating more with my IT and Media Specialist to form engaging, interactive, and thought provoking curriculum using technology and reading comprehension.
